Our Frugal First Lady...

It's no secret that our current First Lady, Michelle Obama is beyond fond of designers like Alexander McQueen and Jason Wu, but did you know that she has been seen shopping for chic and cheap clothing at the Target store located near the White House?  It's true! Mrs. Obama was incognito with her floral print top, b-ball cap and shades as she browsed the popular chain.  On many occasion she has been seen wearing apparel from Target which we all know comes at a reasonably low cost.  She's also been out and about in J. Crew and The Gap line and makes no excuses for the fact that she also loves shopping at Walmart.  Given the status quo of being the wife of the President Of The United States, I don't ever recall a more 'frugal' First Lady...

GOT MILK?...The Most Unlikely Of Fabrics

Just when you think you've heard it all, more than likely you really haven't and this couldn't ring more true to the fact since I've just recently discovered that along with the usual fabrics that clothing can be created from, such as crepe, silk, linen and cotton, 'milk' is now on the list to choose from.  I initially thought this was a joke when I first stumbled upon it but after putting in some time researching, the info I found is the real deal.  A young fashion designer from Germany has developed a fabric called QMilch that is produced from the high concentrations of protein called casein found in milk.  This is truly the first man made fabric developed entirely without the use of chemicals or chemical byproducts.  It is said to have a silky feel that is void of any smell.  The fabric is even cited as being healthy in that the wearer will reap the benefits of anti aging since the amino acids in the protein have antibacterial properties that aid in cleaning out the free radicals that we are exposed to every day.  In addition, it's believed to be able to regulate the circulatory system and body temperature...

Anke Domaske, 28 of Berlin is a microbiologist in addition to being a fashion designer.  What an unlikely pairing of career choices eh?  Anyhow, her fashion label called Mademoiselle Chi Chi has become a favorite of stars like Mischa Barton & Ashlee Simpson.  She's honest to state the facts that milk fabric is not a new concept and has been around since the 30's but she does however, redeem kudos for being the first to produce it 'au naturale'.

The whole process is rather interesting to conceive of.  The milk protein is removed from the dried milk powder, heated in a type of mincing machine with other natural ingredients and then the fibers come out in strands that are spun into a yarn on a spinning machine.  Domaske states it would take around 6 liters of milk to make an entire dress and that the finished product would cost around $200 American dollars.  In case you were wondering, the heating of the proteins is what keeps it from decomposing.  Pretty cool!

Scientists have found that this milk fiber can also be used for medicinal purposes and even as an additive to cosmetics.  Some car companies are even considering looking into using the milk fiber for upholstery.


This seriously gives new meaning to the term..."GOT MILK?"

MOD Monday - Missoni For Target Collection

The Italian fashion house Missoni, famous for it's colorful patterns and unique knitwear is reaching out to us 'common folk' and creating a collection exclusively for Target.  Missoni has been around since 1953 and was most definitely trend worthy in the 60's with it's flair for geometric chevron & striped prints, as well as bold florals.  These pricey designs that hail from Varese, are going mainstream and quite affordable as we will be seeing pieces ranging from $19.99 to $54.99 at the popular retail store, that are all set to go for this Fall 2011. 

Their clothing styles are definitely staying true to the vintage MOD vibe that captured the essence of the 1960's proving that everything in regards to fashion revolves back around decades after they were once popular.  My question is... "Will today's youth opt for this overtly edgy fashion fare?"  I'm thinking probably not and that this will be more revered by the late 30's to 40 something crowd, because these pieces are definitely in the same form as they were over forty years ago as pictured here in this vintage Missoni swimwear ad...  

The dish is that there has been a limited supply since they hit the stores on September 13th and once they're gone, they're gone so you can either purchase them direct or online until October 13th.  

I love all things MOD however, I'm not quite sure that I would personally go to this extreme with the pairings shown above.  In my opinion, I would worry that someone would mistake me as dressing up for Halloween as a hippie or a character from the Austin Powers flick ya know? Maybe one or two Missoni accessories would suffice, but as a whole, these styles are just too busy for my taste!

Keeping Cool & Staying Stylish

Just because were in the midst of the dog days of Summer, that doesn't mean that we have to lose our fashion sense.  Keeping cool & staying stylish at the same time is easily attainable as well as affordable.

There are a few simple 'must have' staples to include into your Summer wardrobe which should include... A sundress as well as a maxi dress, a pair of flat sandals, loose fitting Bermuda shorts (khakis are always 'in') and or a pair of jean cut offs (a timeless style), a tank top & some bold sun shades.

Warm weather is obviously all about everything 'minimal' which makes it easy to mix and match the few pieces you need to stay stylish for Summer 2011.

Fashion In Film Friday - "The Lost Boys"

Even before the movie 'Twilight', vampires have been romanticized in movies.  The 1987 flick Lost Boys, starring Kiefer Sutherland as the head vamp & Jason Patric as the lead role, was definitely one to remember. 

Besides having a killer soundtrack, the style of the undead was off the hook, retro bohemian gypsy.  They wore embellished military jackets, long trench coats, army boots, bangle jewelry and long flowing skirts.  And let's not forget to mention the big 80's hair!  Jamie Gertz who played Patric's love interest, was rogue'ishly feminine in her belly dancer inspired boho floor length skirt and colorful peasant inspired top.

Shortly after this film was released, the grunge movement in regards to fashions came about which leaves us to believe that the inspiration behind it may have very well have come from this.  Grunge by definition is based on the Seattle sound that emerged during the late 80's and trailed on well into the first half of the 90's and the fashion style changes that came along with it.  

There hasn't been much of an evolution in comparison to grunge circa 1987 til' now as we've seen a stand still in the design, however there's been a bit of a goth influence to the grunge status quo as vampire movies have evoked a cosplay feel to the fashion statement, by incorporating a lot of 'black & metal' into their daily wear.

I am personally a big fan of vampire movies, so I have one question for you...
